Feasibility Study

In 2014, Iowa State engaged Invision Architecture to assess the usage of space within the Memorial Union. The study provided a comprehensive review of repurposing the Hotel space in the Memorial Union, and evaluated existing spaces and functions on all floors. The overall goal of the study was to provide a clear understanding of general building use, address partnerships, and provide recommendations to better utilize existing space within the Memorial Union.

Objectives of the study:

  • Increase dining seating capacity within the current footprint of the Memorial Union

  • Provide a comprehensive review of the most effective use of the former Hotel floors (floors 4-6)

  • Identify opportunities to accommodate the growth of student organizations and student engagement opportunities within the Memorial Union

  • Evaluate existing spaces and functions on the ground, first, second, and third floors

Key findings of the study:

  • Seating for dining is significantly undersized.

  • Student organization growth has exceeded the space available.

  • Meeting rooms for 75-125 people are highest in demand.

  • Most tenant spaces in the building are undersized to meet the current student demand.

  • There is not enough space in the Multicultural Center to accommodate growing student needs

  • The Veterans Center is undersized to fulfill programming

  • The Soults Family Visitor Center is undersized to serve the current volume of demand.

  • There are significant wayfinding issues throughout the building
