Gordon was born on October 11, 1924, in Los Angeles to Mary Bohr. He grew up in Grosse Point, Michigan with two sisters - Joan and Sara. His father, Lieutenant Commander Gordon "Mickey" Cochrane, the former manager of the Detroit Tigers, was stationed in the Pacific during the time of his son's death.

Private First Class Gordon Stanley Cochrane entered service on January 1944 at Fort Dodge, Iowa. In October of 1944 he joined the Anti-Tank Company, 289th Infantry.

Gordon died of wounds at Houthuizen, Holland on March 25, 1945.
