Biography

Second Lieutenant Ross Sifford, Jr. was born to Ross Sifford (Ex. 1905) and Hazel Pickett at Wall Lake, Sac County, Iowa on July 25, 1917. He later called Caroll, Iowa his hometown.

Ross graduated from Iowa State College in spring 1940. He then attended law school at the University of Iowa that fall. He wanted to complete his law degree when he returned from service.

He entered the Army on July 11, 1941, at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, having reported from Carroll, Iowa, for induction. He was commissioned second lieutenant October 24, 1942, after completing Officer Candidate School at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He later served with the the 7th Army, 752nd Tank Battalion, Company A in Italy.

Ross died near Rome on June 5, 1944. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star on September 18, 1944 and the Purple Heart.
