Biography

Sergeant Jay William Clayton was born and raised in Monroe, Wisconsin. He was the son of Mr. W. D. Clayton.

Jay graduated from Iowa State College in 1916 and enlisted into the army on May 28, 1918 at Neillsville, Wisconsin. The army assigned him to the 161st Depot Brigade, Company 23, at Camp Grant, Illinois. 

Sometime thereafter he was promoted to corporal, and on August 1, 1918 he made sergeant.

Jay died of pneumonia at Camp Grant on October 6, 1918.
