Biography

Sergeant Dean Carleton Culbertson was born in Nevada, Iowa, on March 5, 1915. He grew up in Fayette, Iowa.

Dean graduated from Fayette High School and attended Upper Iowa University where he received a Bachelors of Science in 1936. He also graduated from Iowa State College in 1939 with another Bachelors of Science, this one in Poultry Industries. He then worked as a poultry manager of the O. S. Caesar estate at Barrington, Illinois, and at the H. E. Blood Farms in South Lyon, Michigan.

He enlisted at Detroit, Michigan, on November 24, 1942. He was transferred to Camp Maxey, Texas on December 1, 1942; Camp Swift, Texas on November 17, 1943; and Fort Dix, New Jersey on June 26, 1944. He achieved the rank of Corporal on May 12, 1943 and made Sergeant on July 18, 1944. He received the infantry badge on August 3, 1944.

Dean went to Europe in September 1944 and was killed in action in Germany on November 21, 1944. He was buried in Holland. His parents were Le Roy Glessner Culberston and Maud Blunt.

His mother received word of his death while she was the principal of schools at Stanwood, Iowa.
