Memorial Union Art Gallery Exhibit
Inaugural Exhibit in New Gallery Space at the MU
Box, Book and Board: Works by Deb Anders Bond, Molly Ethridge, Eduardo Garcia, & Kathy Svec
Through October 11, 2020
The Memorial Union has a long history of dedication to the arts, and our new Art Gallery is proof positive that the commitment is steadfast. A dedicated space for art exhibits opened to the public this week on the first floor of the MU in Room 1568, formerly known as the Browsing Library. The MU took advantage of the building's closing over the summer to take care of asbestos abatement in this area. Once that was done and the space was cleaned up, we were able to re-evaluate our building's needs and repurpose this area to a full-time art exhibit space. Students can still take advantage of several lounges in the MU for studying and meeting friends, and now we can use the new MU Art Gallery for exhibits, classes, and as rentable space for small get-togethers.
The chapel is still accessible through this space and can be used as reflection or prayer space for all community members.
Our inaugural show features four local artists, including long-time arts advocate and MU retiree Kathy Svec. Artists Deb Anders Bond, Molly Ethridge, and Eduardo Garcia are exhibiting with Svec and share their common love of bookbinding, papermaking, digital and paper collage, and assemblage. A total of 61 pieces incorporating those elements and a bit of storytelling are on display through October 11.
Memorial Union Art Gallery hours are Monday-Friday from 10am-4pm and Sunday from 1- 4pm. A public reception will be held on Sunday, September 13 from 1-4pm. Face coverings and social distancing are required in the Memorial Union.
